How to Swaddle a Baby

A Simple, Soothing Guide for New Parents

There’s something beautifully timeless about swaddling — a soft wrap, a safe embrace, and a newborn feeling held just like they were in the womb. For many babies, swaddling offers instant comfort, better sleep, and fewer flailing arms in the night.

At Neutral Nest, we believe in parenting with intention, calm, and confidence. If you're wondering how to swaddle your baby safely and gently, this guide is here to help — step by step.

What Is Swaddling?

Swaddling is the practice of gently wrapping a baby in a light, breathable blanket to help them feel secure. The snug wrap can:

  • Soothe a fussy baby

  • Reduce the startle reflex (which can wake them)

  • Support better, longer sleep (for baby and you)

When done correctly and safely, swaddling can be a wonderful part of your newborn's early sleep routine.

When Should You Swaddle?

  • Swaddling is best for newborns, typically from birth up to around 8 weeks.

  • Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of rolling over — for safety reasons, babies must be unswaddled before they roll.

What You’ll Need

Choose a soft, breathable muslin or cotton swaddle blanket. Avoid thick fabrics that can cause overheating.

We love our Neutral Nest embroidered muslin blankets for their softness, breathability, and timeless style.

Step-by-Step: How to Swaddle a Baby

Follow these gentle steps to swaddle your baby safely and comfortably:

1. Lay Out the Blanket

Spread the blanket flat in a diamond shape, with one corner pointing up. Fold the top corner down about 15–20cm to form a straight edge.

2. Lay Your Baby Down

Place your baby on their back with their shoulders just below the fold.

3. Wrap One Side

Take the left side of the blanket and wrap it over your baby’s body, tucking it snugly under their right arm and back.

4. Fold the Bottom

Bring the bottom of the blanket up over your baby’s feet. You can tuck it loosely into the top or let it rest naturally — make sure baby’s legs have room to move and aren’t bound too tightly (this helps protect healthy hip development).

5. Wrap the Other Side

Take the right side of the blanket across your baby’s body and tuck it under their left side. Keep it snug but not tight — you should be able to fit 2–3 fingers between the blanket and baby’s chest.

Safety Reminders

  • Always place baby on their back to sleep
Swaddled or not, this is the safest position for newborns.

  • Don’t overheat
Choose lightweight, breathable fabric and keep the room at a comfortable temperature.

  • Watch for signs it’s time to stop swaddling
As soon as your baby starts trying to roll over, switch to a sleep sack or arms-free sleeping solution.

Top Tips for Swaddling Success

  • Swaddle for sleep only — not for awake or playtime

  • Practice makes perfect — don’t worry if your first few tries feel awkward

  • If baby resists swaddling, try leaving one or both arms out and see what they prefer

Some babies love the snugness. Others like a little more freedom. As always, follow your baby's cues.
